Exceptional Women Environmentalists by Frances Rooney

Regular list price       $10.95

(Grades 7 to 10 )

From Rachel Carson, the woman who started the modern environmental movement, to Severn Cullis-Suzuki, former host of Suzuki’s Nature Quest, to Marina Silva, who fights to keep the Brazilian rain forest from disappearing, read about these ten amazing women who prove how ordinary people can do extraordinary things. While the threat of environmental crises becomes more dominant in the media and popular culture, these trailblazing women are taking action to make a vital difference for our planet.

Fantastic Female Filmmakers by Suzanne Simoni

Regular list price       $10.95

(Grades 7-10 )

This book tells the stories of ten women who are some of the most creative and respected directors in the world. From Nell Shipman, who started her own production company in the silent movie days, to Ida Lupino, the American actress who was the first woman to direct herself in a film, to Academy-Award nominee Deepa Mehta, whose films have brought East Indian stories to audiences around the world. These directors prove that women can be stars behind the camera as well as on the screen.

the great hopeful someday by Elisabeth Belliveau

Regular list price       $19.95

(Grades 10 to 12 )

This book is a graphic journal of the author’s travels and musings about the end of her recent relationship. Her finely inked images and text packed with nostalgia, which explore the beautiful in the mundane, have already received high praise. It also includes a DVD of her animations. Although somewhat unusual I found this book impossible to put aside and I think that many students, particularly those interested in drawing will be intrigued and possibly inspired by it.

Skinny by Ibi Kaslik

Regular list price       $14.95

(Grades 10 to 12) (mature) (Published in 2004)

Giselle is 22 and a top medical student and a functioning anorexic. Except now, driven by the pressures of school and her late father’s rejection, Giselle is no longer functioning. Her sister Holly, a 14-year-old track star, can see that Giselle is going to have to confront a few things if she wants to get better. It seems easier for the athletic Holly, she sweats through life’s problems - but now even she feels burdened by the past.

This vivid novel captures with devastating honesty the story of two sisters struggling to come to terms with their adult selves. Edgy and powerful, it is a sometimes gritty and often wryly funny look at growing up and the hunger for acceptance that drives us all.

Reviewed by Ann Ketcheson. CM: Canadian Review of Materials, June, 2005 Highly Recommended. "This book deals with difficult subjects. It is not an 'easy read,' but one is compelled to continue from chapter to chapter. It is confusing, exhilarating, magnetic and repulsive all at the same time...rather like the main character herself. "
